Southern California Interagency Incident Management Team 3 (Dietrich) assumed command of the Grindstone
Complex September 17, 2003 at 6:00 a.m.

Fire Size: 8,019 acres. The fire (complex) is 100% contained. The Deafy Fire has burned 4,696 acres.

Current Fire Status: There are 39 confirmed fires; one in active status, 37 controlled, 2 contained. There is approximately 55 miles of fire perimeter. The fuels involved are mature chaparral and mixed conifer pine with heavy surface fuel.

Operational Plan for Today: Rehabilitation of the fire line and access roads is ongoing. 2500 acres have been
rehabilitated to date. Heavy rehabilitation and mop-up operations will continue on the Deafy and the Happy Camp
Fires due to the large amounts of downed and smoldering surface fuels. Grindstone Fire resources will support the
Mendocino National Forest for initial attack needs.

Equipment assigned to the Grindstone Complex includes: 13 crews (20 persons each), 10 engines, 5 dozers,
17 water tenders, and 2 helicopters.  The total number of personnel assigned to the complex is 486.

Grindstone Complex firefighters and Mendocino National Forest personnel urge hunters to use caution.
