Fire Update – Cabbage Fire
Breaking Information: The weather continued to cooperate with fire fighting forces yesterday. The western side of the fire along the Eel River was mostly cold, with few hotspots showing. A Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation Team (BAER) has initiated efforts to evaluate the fire area. This team is comprised of resource specialists who will evaluate the burned area and implement a plan to minimize potential damage to life and property. The fire investigation is continuing, however current evidence points to an escaped campfire as the probable cause. General Overview: The fire area is located in very steep terrain with limited access. Crews are continuing the completion of containment lines east of the Eel River. Mop-up will continue for several days. Current acreage burned is 1,540. Estimated containment is today (4/5/2000) at approximately 6:00 P.M. Weather: Today’s weather is expected to continue a slow cooling trend with temperatures into the low 70’s. Winds are expected to increase slightly from the west and are expected to bring some moist air into the area. While there is still no rain in the forecast for the immediate future, the relative humidity should increase gradually over the next several days. Fire Facts: Currently, 17 hand crews, 9 fire engines, 3 helicopters, and 6 water tenders are assigned to the Cabbage Fire. Agencies contributing to the suppression efforts include US Forest Service, California Department of Forestry, Kern County Fire, National Park Service, National Weather Service, and the California Conservation Corp. A total of 522 personnel are assigned to the fire. Demobilization is underway and expected to continue for the next several days with resources being released or held for reassignment to other fires as the need arises. Closures and Restrictions: The Middle Creek Campground, and the Cabbage Patch Trail continue to be closed to public access. Nearby Deer Valley and Penny Pines Campgrounds remain open, and are recommended as alternate camping sites for people who have made plans to come to the area this week. For further closure information, please call the Upper Lake Ranger Station at (707) 275-2361. With weather patterns showing continued drying and moderate fire activity elsewhere in Northern California, fire officials are concerned about the upcoming fire season. Please insure all your activities that may include campfires, OHV use, or household burning are done in such a manner as to eliminate any possibility you may contribute to the cause of a wildfire. | |||||||||||||
