Breaking Information: The weather continued to cooperate with fire fighting forces yesterday, as winds stayed relatively calm. The western side of the fire along the Eel River was mostly cold, with few hotspots showing.  Hand crews, in spite of rugged terrain and poor access, contained a troublesome spot fire just west of the Eel River.

General Overview: The fire is burning in steep terrain with very limited access.  Dense and highly flammable brush, combined with unseasonably warm, dry weather are the main challenges facing fire fighters.  Crews and helicopters are holding the fire east of the Eel River, just northwest of the Snow Mountain Wilderness Area.  The Cabbage fire is now 45% contained.  Current acreage burned is 1,540.

Weather:  Today’s weather is expected to continue unseasonably warm and dry, however the maximum temperature should be slightly lower and with the humidity higher by 5 to 7 percent.  The key factor is gentle winds, which are expected to shift to a southwesterly flow.  While there is still no rain in the forecast for the immediate future, humidities are expected to increase gradually over the next several days.

Fire Facts: Currently, 21 hand crews, 13 fire engines, and 5 water tenders are assigned to the Cabbage Fire.  Aircraft assigned include 5 helicopters and 3 air tankers.  Contributing agencies include US Forest Service, California Department of Forestry, Kern County Fire, National Park Service, National Weather Service, and the California Conservation Corp.  A total of 596 personnel are committed to the fire fighting efforts.  Demobilization has begun with some crews and engines released or assigned to other fires in Northern California.

Closures and Restrictions: Mendocino National Forest Supervisor Dan Chisholm has closed Middle Creek Campground, and the Cabbage Patch Trail to public access to facilitate fire suppression operations.  Nearby Deer Valley and Penny Pines Campgrounds remain open, and are recommended as alternate camping sites for people who have made plans to come to the area this week.  With this extended unseasonable dry weather, please help fire fighters and insure all campfires and door-yard burns are FIRE SAFE!
