Breaking information: Saturday morning April 1, the Cabbage Fire was discovered 22 miles north of Clear Lake, in Lake County, on the Mendocino National Forest.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and had grown to approximately 2,000 acres by this morning.  California National Incident Management Team One (Scott Vail, Incident Commander) has been assigned to the fire.  Currently no structures are threatened.  However, structure protection planning is underway several miles west of the fire as a precautionary measure.  A fire information center has been established at Upper Lake Ranger Station, (707) 275-2361.

A Temporary Flight Restriction has been put into effect to prevent conflicts between air operations on the fire and other aircraft.

In addition, Mendocino National Forest Supervisor Dan Chisholm has closed Middle Creek Campground, and the Cabbage Patch Trail.  This was necessary to facilitate fire-fighting operations, and to protect public safety.  Near by Deer Valley, and Penny Pines Campgrounds remain open, and are recommended as alternate camping sites for people who have made plans to come to the area this week.

General Overview: The fire is burning in steep and difficult to access terrain.  Heavy and highly flammable brush, combined with unseasonably warm, dry weather are the main challenges facing fire fighters.  Currently the fire is holding east of the Eel River, just northwest of the Snow Mountain Wilderness Area.  Today, crews and aircraft are concentrating on the west side of the fire, with the objective of keeping the it from crossing the Eel River.

Weather:  Today’s weather conditions continue to be unusually warm and dry.  Maximum temperatures are expected to reach into the eighties, with minimum relative humidities from 12 to 18 percent.

Fire Facts: Currently, 22 hand crews, 2 bulldozers, and 25 fire engines are assigned to the Cabbage Fire.  Assigned aircraft include 6 helicopters and 3 air tankers.
