  • On July 6, 1994, at approximately 16:10 hours, fourteen firefighters died while fighting the South Canyon Fire - 8 years ago today.
  • It's 111 air miles from Storm King Mountain.
  • The names of the fallen firefighters are included in our dedication on page two of your IAP
  • Our intention today is two fold:

1. To honor those who gave their lives in the line of duty - this day, 8 years ago.

2. Provide firefighters the time to increase their level of awareness of safe firefighting practices, and to remind us of the lessons that must be learned from this tragedy.

  • At approximately 16:10 today "Rattle Communications" will advise everyone in the field of a "Remembrance and Safety Stand-down".
  • Everyone not involved in a critical section of their work is expected to take 30 minutes reading and discussing the Executive Summary discussion points included in your IAP with your fellow workers, and use this time to resolve any safety questions that have come up on this or previous assignments.
  • The purpose is to honor those who perished, remind ourselves of the factors involved, and advance our level of safe firefighting practices.
It is our hope that you use this time wisely and seriously to learn from this accident - so it will never happen again.
